DEIDRE

“You have a delivery.” My assistant Becki pokes her head in my office with a big smile on her face. I’ve been keeping myself busy the last few weeks. After Deacon’s engagement, which as I predicted is now on the back page of the Lifestyle section of most papers and blogs, there was the front-page worthy announcement of Declan’s child and subsequent engagement—a hot topic on every Sunday football show. All of this is happening during the team’s march toward the championship game—we have to win the next two games to clinch the division—so yeah, things are super busy in the home office. The Masters twins have kept SMZ entertained with their nightclub antics, enough home team drama to keep the producer happy and away from Ellen’s domestic violence claims.

Considering the courtroom spectacle actress Amber Harrod had recently with a similar fraudulent claim, I don’t think SMZ wants to risk another lawsuit, which we most definitely would pursue.

According to my investigator, Ellen has been laying low. She left town after the divorce but has come back several times for long weekends, placing all her stuff from the house in storage. It sold quickly, which means Aggie is now truly free and clear of Ms. Ellen Whitham.

Of course, I haven’t talked to him in weeks. My heart aches and my feelings are hurt, but I guess it’s better to know now—he’s not in the right place to be with someone who won’t chase after or gaslight him into loving them—than learn the hard lesson months from now after my heart is fully invested.

Besides… he needs time to play the field, sow his wild oats, and notch his bedpost before he settles down again, while I’m in the market for a committed relationship.

At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

“What is it?” I stand, using the distraction as an excuse to stretch my limbs.

She pushes the door open and pulls in a cart full of flowers behind her.

“What the hell? Who died, because it’s not my birthday?”

Becki places four bouquets on my side table, each one more elaborate than the next. “Someone sent these anonymously. The only instruction the delivery guy had is you’re supposed to read the cards in order, starting with #1.”

Card #1 is stuck in the simplest bouquet comprised of rustic wildflowers and white daisies.

“I’ll leave you to your mystery.” She giggles, pushing the cart out and closing the door behind her.

“Thanks.” I call back absentmindedly, my brain cycling through who from my past would do something like this. Men who send me flowers typically default to a dozen long-stemmed red roses with baby’s breath in a long gold box with maybe a sprig of crystals or something. They are never original, never eye-catching like these assortments before me.

I slide my letter opener under the flap and pull out a thick square of card stock.

I woke up on a Monday, my heart light and soul free, my thoughts with a beautiful woman who gifted me a new life with two phone calls and a handshake.
